CEPHA Network

CEPHA is a truly interdisciplinary/inter-sectoral network comprising partners from academia, public health, industry, government, local authorities, NGOs and local communities with expertise in (1) Environmental Science and Engineering; (2) Human and Planetary Health and Wellbeing; (3) Social Sciences, Economics and Participatory Arts; and (4) Environmental Health Education, Literacy and Advocacy. We will expand on previous efforts to enhance interdisciplinary aspects (particularly social science) and provide a platform for deeper engagement with industry, regulators, practitioners and local communities, including disadvantaged groups.

CEPHA network is coordinated by Network Management Team (NMT), comprising the network Director, Co-Director, Manager, and Advisor. 13 key visionary leaders forming the Network Steering Group (NSG) of CEPHA network.

Dr Shiva Nagendra SM, PhD, is a Professor of Environmental Engineering in Department of Civil Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM), Chennai, India. Prof Nagendra has 20 years' experience in research, teaching, consultancy, and community engagement, exceptional networking skills, and has extensively engaged with industry, communities and regulators in India to develop pollution control solutions. He has published more than 75 research publications in international and national refereed journals, one reference book, and 100 papers in conferences. He is co-author of the book titled 'Artificial Neural Networks in Vehicular Pollution' Modelling' published by Springer‐Verlag, Germany (SCI‐41, ISBN‐10: 3‐540‐37417‐5). He has been part of numerous grants involving multiple national and international partners. He is Founding Chair of Indian International Conference on Air Quality Management (IICAQM); Director of GCRF-Clean Environment and Planetary Health in Asia (CEPHA) Network; Vice-President of Society for Indoor Environment (SIE). His research works focused on air quality management which includes monitoring, source apportionment, modelling, design and development of emission control system, development of air quality management system, personal exposure monitoring, environmental impact assessment, outdoor-indoor air pollution relationships and indoor air quality management. He is associate editor (Health and Cities) for Frontiers in Sustainable Cities and Journal of the Institution of Engineers (India) Series A.

Sotiris Vardoulakis is inaugural Professor of Global Environmental Health at the Australian National University, where he heads the Environment, Climate and Health Research Group. Before this, he was Director of Research and Head of the WHO Collaborating Centre on Occupational Health at the Institute of Occupational Medicine in Edinburgh, UK. Sotiris is founding co-Chair of the International Consortium for Urban Environmental Health and Sustainability (Healthy-Polis) and Honorary Professor at the European Centre for Environment and Human Health at the University of Exeter Medical School. Previously, He was Head of the Air Pollution and Climate Change Group, and the Environmental Change Department, at Public Health England, and held academic positions at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and the University of Birmingham. He was one of the lead authors of the first UK Climate Change Risk Assessment and contributor to the National Adaptation Programme. He served as a member of the NICE Public Health Advisory Committee on Air Pollution, and the UK Royal College of Paediatricians and Childhood Health Group on Indoor Air Quality.
Over the last 20 years, Sotiris has advised national and local governments and international organizations, such as the World Health Organization, the European Parliament, the UK Government, the Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Australian Department of Health, on the health effects of climate change and air pollution, and environmental sustainability, health protection, occupational hygiene, and risk communication. He has been involved in numerous research projects, including field studies, environmental monitoring and modelling, epidemiology, risk assessment and policy analysis in Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa, and the Pacific. He is Specialty Chief Editor (Health and Cities) for Frontiers in Sustainable Cities, and Associate Editor (Climate Change and Health) for the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health.

Dr. Madhusudanan. M,former Regional Director, Scientist, Central Pollution Control Board, have more than 35 years of practical experience in the field of pollution and control activities. Being worked in the regulatory regime has all practical experience in inspection, coordination and implementation of Water, Air and EP (Act) 1986. During the tenure in CPCB, six Continuous Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Stations (CAAQMS) three each in Bengaluru and Chennai had been established. Worked as National Coordinator for Agrarian sector in CPCB and involved in the development of revision of Standards for Sugar, Textiles and Slaughter House. Being the In-charge for more than 15 years in CPCB laboratory, equipped laboratory for all statutory (NABL, Osha and EPA) audits, updated manuals and protocols for calibration and development of test procedures. Also associated with the development of Comprehensive Environmental Pollution Index (CEPI) and Air Quality Index (AQI). Have taken part as a team lead for monitoring and control of pollution through online emission & effluent, Polluted River Stretch, Non-attainment City and NCAP programme. Guided students for their M.Tech programme published and presented many papers in conferences, workshops and training programmes. Dr Cunrui Huang is a Professor and Department Chair of Health Policy & Management, in the School of Public Health at Sun Yat-sen University in China. He is the Chief Scientist of the National Key R&D Program funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology of China, Lead author of the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report, and China National Committee Member of Future Earth. Dr Huang’s research focuses on the health impacts of climate change and extreme events, especially on more vulnerable populations. He has published over 100 articles in prestigious journals and his work has been featured in many media outlets. Dr Huang is also committed to build and strengthen the Collaborative Network on Climate Change and Health Research under the Belt & Road Initiative.

Biography

Prof. Nguyen Thi Kim Oanh got her Dipl. Eng. in Meteorology (1978) with the first class honours from Odessa Hydrometeorology Institute, Ukraine; M. Eng. (1991, graduation prize award) and Ph D (1994) in Environmental Technology and Management from AIT, Thailand. She has started her work as a faculty member at AIT since 1997, focusing on teaching and research in air pollution engineering and management. Professor Kim Oanh has taken sabbaticals at the University of Washington in Seattle and University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign, USA (2004), and Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies, Germany (2012).

She has spent untiring efforts to provide a better characterization of air pollution issues in Asian countries to serve as the basis for improving the air quality. With a focus on particulate matter, carbonaceous aerosol, ozone and toxic volatile organic compounds, she has conducted field measurements, emission inventory and modeling studies at urban, national and regional scales in Asia. Her current research extends to climate and clean air co-benefit analysis for emission reduction measures from key sources in Asian developing countries including the traffic, field open burning of agricultural residue and residential combustion. With her extensive experience and professional networking capacity she has conducted, as PI or Co-PI, over 55 regional collaboration research projects. She also organized, co-organized and served as a key resource person for about 150 training courses in air quality and climate related topics. Under her supervision, as of 2020, there are 160 Master and 15 Ph D AIT graduates who continue work and research on improving air quality in Asia and beyond. She published 2 books (ed), and authored/co-authored 9 monographs, 50 book chapters; 105 peer-reviewed papers in international referred journals; and a number of conference and keynote presentations (https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Nguyen_Thi_Oanh).

Presently, she is a member of the Asia Pacific Clean Air Partnership (APCAP) Science Panel. Since 2016, she has been appointed as a WHO expert in the Guideline Development Group for the update of the WHO Global Air Quality Guidelines (AQGs). She was an elected member of the Scientific Steering Committee of the IGAC (International Global Atmospheric Chemistry) during 2015-2019 and was a co-chair of IGAC-MANGO (IGAC Monsoon Asia & Oceania Networking Group during 2016-2019. She served as a vice-chair of 2011 UNEP/WMO “Integrated Assessment of Black Carbon and Tropospheric Ozone” and was the coordinating lead author of a chapter in “UNEP Regional Assessment Report on Atmospheric Pollution in the Asia Pacific” (2019).

Prof. Kim Oanh has won a number of international awards and recognitions including several paper awards, the Extra Mile award (by BAQ conference), AIT teaching awards and the distinguished senior researcher award by AIT in 2015. Her students have won many best paper awards from the West Coast Section of A&WMA, USA.

Trained as a physician in Bangalore Medical College, Poornima has a Master’s in Epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and a PhD in Social Medicine from the University of Bristol, UK. After a few years in clinical practice, a short stint at the Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics Division and the Population Health Research Institute at the McMaster University in Canada piqued her interest in epidemiology and public health leading her to acquire training in the UK in these disciplines under reputed mentors. She has received a Fogarty Scholarship in 2011, a Career Development Research Fellowship from Wellcome Trust 2014 and a Public Health Research Initiative Fellowship from the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India in 2015. Her earlier work in the New Delhi Birth Cohort and the Andhra Pradesh Children and Parents Study (APCAPS) involved studies on the role of early life growth and development on later life cardiometabolic and other chronic disease outcomes, in addition to intergenerational influences on cognitive function and chronic disease risk in the offspring cohorts. Since 2015, Poornima moved her focus to the study of environmental health risk factors recognising that this was missing in children’s’ health research in India. She was instrumental in sensitising the fraternity of birth cohort researchers in India through training and capacity building for environmental health. She is currently Additional Professor, Head, Environmental Health and Deputy Director of the Centre for Environmental Health at the Public Health Foundation of India where she leads a team of nearly 20 researchers and consultants on research, training, advocacy, capacity building and remediation for environmental health issues spanning air pollution, climate change, water, sanitation and hygiene, chemical and heavy metal exposures and children’s environmental health. Additionally, she is a Consultant at the Centre for Chronic Disease Control, New Delhi where she continues research in life course approach to chronic disease. She also leads work in engaging health sector leadership for environmental issues across India. Poornima enjoys music, reading, writing poetry, travelling and every opportunity to spend time with family, kids and nature.

Ongoing Projects and Research Works
Poornima has a core interest in chronic disease epidemiology and environmental health. She has conducted studies in birth cohorts in New Delhi and Andhra Pradesh that assessed the role of early life growth, development and socio-environmental determinants on adult disease risk. Her interest in lifecourse epidemiology motivated her to conduct an intergenerational study in the Andhra Pradesh Children and Parents Study(APCAPS) assessing parental influences on offspring disease risk accounting for physical, biological and socio-environmental determinants. She is currently extending her work to the study of environmental exposures on children’s current and long-term disease risk. Currently, as Head, Environmental Health, PHFI and Deputy Director, Centre for Environmental Health in PHFI, she is leading a team in building a platform to expand the evidence-base for environmental health in India across thematic areas of air pollution, climate change, water, sanitation and hygiene chemical and heavy metal exposures, health impact assessment studies and others. Her current role encompasses research, training, advocacy and technical consultations on these environmental issues. She has led studies to assess the environmental health impacts on vulnerable populations living in the vicinity of coal-fired thermal power plants besides two other studies in coalescing health sector leadership on climate-smart health care. She is currently Chair of the Research sub-group in the WHO-Global Climate and health Alliance CSO working group for Climate Change and Health besides Lead for the Centre of Excellence for Green and Climate resilient healthcare facilities under the National Program for Climate Change and Human Health.

Suresh is the Regional Director, Scientist, Central Pollution Control Board, have more than 31 years of practical experience in in pollution abatement. He had effective co-ordination with state boards in implementation of Environmental Acts & Rules in southern & central states viz Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Goa, Tamilnadu, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh,Puducherry & Lakshadweep. Suresh conducted inspections at More than 200 industries located in various parts of India under Environmental Surveillance Squad/ Online Continuous Emission/Effluent Monitoring System in past few years. He conducted auditing of Air , Noise & Water quality monitoring stations under National Air Quality Monitoring programme & National Water Quality Monitoring Programme. He has reviewed and ranked the performance of southern state pollution control boards as per NGT order under Performance auditing of SPSBs in last year. He has organized numerous capacity building programmes at various platforms for multilevel officers of various departments.

Prarthana Borah is India Director of Clean Air Asia www.cleanairasia.org , an international not for profit headquartered in Manila working towards better air quality in over 1000 cities in Asia.

Based in New Delhi, Prarthana leads the implementation of the India Strategy of Clean Air Asia. She has been working with City Municipal Corporations to assess air quality management status of over Indian cities as well as the preparation/ implementation of air action plans www.cities4cleanair.com She is also a sector expert https://smartnet.niua.org/csc/team.html with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, for tracking air quality indicators of smart cities. An Environmental Sustainability Strategist with more than 20 years’ experience, prior to joining Clean Air Asia, she has been involved in policy support initiatives like preparation of Government of India’s policy document on Climate Friendly Traditional Practices of India for the Climate COP21 in Paris that was released by the Prime Minister of India. She was also been engaged in policy documentation prepared for UN Biodiversity COP 15 and for the negotiation of the SDGs by Government of India at United Nations.

An Economist by training she is also trained in Environmental Education and has worked for over 10 years in Education for Sustainable Development. Her research interests include environmental education for children and youth, culture as a driver for protecting the environment and capacity building to strengthen air quality management policy.

Stellios Plainiotis is widely recognised as one of Asia’s pioneers in sustainable design. He is the co-author of the first Chinese Guidebook “Design for Sustainability”, which is now used as a textbook at the Tongji University, Shanghai and the University of Nottingham (UK). His work is focused on the long-term impact of the Built Environment on human health and society, climate change and land use. He has consulted over 80 projects across Europe, South East Asia and the Far East which include the Crystal Palace Park and Hoxton Square in London, Rohansky Ostrov Masterplan in Prague, Issam Fares Institute in Beirut, the Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 and the Petronas Cititowers in Kuala Lumpur. Professor Mukesh Khare is a distinguished Professor at Department of Civil Engineering at IIT Delhi. He is the Fellow of Institution of Engineers India and Fellow of Wessex Institute of Great Britain. He is a Chartered Engineer and was born in Varanasi, India. He obtained his Ph.D. degree in Faculty of Engineering from Newcastle University, UK and has managed a range of environmental projects throughout his professional career. With a specialization in air quality modelling, Prof. Khare’s experience has covered research and development studies, teaching, consulting, modelling, editorial activities. In addition, Prof. Khare has authored more than 250 research publications primarily for peer reviewed journals and conference proceedings. He has 30 years of teaching and research experience and is a distinguished member of many committees of National Green Tribunal (NGT) and Environmental Pollution Control Authority (EPCA). He is appointed as an Expert Member of High -level Task Force (HLTF), Chaired by PMO to deal with increasing air pollution problems in Delhi NCR.

Anil Namdeo is Professor of Air Quality Management in the Department of Geography and Environmental Sciences, Northumbria University, Newcastle, United Kingdom. He is a Chartered Environmentalist and a Chartered Scientist. He is a Fellow of the Royal Meteorological Society, UK and a member of the Institute of Air Quality Management, UK. He was a member of the NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) Public Health Advisory Committee on Outdoor Air Pollution and Health. He is a member of the US Transport Research Board’s Committee on Transport and Air Pollution. He has special research interests in air quality (monitoring, modelling and management) and health. His research focuses on environmental and sustainability assessments of land-use, transportation and other developmental policies. He has led and contributed to several UK and international projects on air quality and sustainability, and is actively engaged in international research projects and collaborations, and has close links with academics and researchers in EU, USA, Brazil, Mexico, India, China, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Egypt, Kenya and Tanzania. He is currently leading a joint UK-India project CADTIME (Clean Air for Delhi Through Interventions, Mitigations and Engagement) under the APHH (Air Pollution and Human Health in Megacity Delhi) programme. He also leads Mexico City and Newcastle Partnership on Health and Air Pollution Research and Engagement (MANAPRE) project funded jointly by the British Council and the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation of Mexico City (SECTEI).

Prashant is a Professor and Chair in Air Quality and Health, founding Director of Global Centre for Clean Air Research (GCARE), at the University of Surrey, UK; and an Adjunct Professor at Trinity College Dublin, Ireland. He received his PhD (Engineering) from the University of Cambridge after securing Cambridge-Nehru Scholarship, and an MTech (Environmental Engineering & Management) from Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. His multidisciplinary research builds an understanding of the formation, emission and exposure of particles, both from vehicle exhausts and non-vehicular sources. He investigates their contribution to pollution, especially in megacity contexts. He is developing approaches to low-cost sensing and contributing to the development of exposure control technology and guidelines for policymakers to curtail pollution exposure in cities, with associated health benefits. He has supervised >25 PhD/Postdocs, published >200 journal articles attracting >7650 citations (h-index, 47, i10index, 123). He is currently a PI/CoI on numerous NERC, EPSRC, Innovate UK and H2020 grants, securing >£7M in individual research funding. He serves editorial board of several journals, and reviews/advises as a panel member many funding agencies worldwide. He is convening Royal Society’s Rapid Assistance in Modelling the Pandemic (RAMP TT7-SG7) on COVID-19. His research has featured in well-read media outlets such as the BBC and The Times.

Ms. Sharma currently serves as the County Coordinator for India for the international non-profit organization Pure Earth (formerly Blacksmith Institute), where she coordinates and facilitates Pure Earth mission of saving and improving human- lives, in particularly of the children in poor communities by reducing disease-causing pollution in India. She has spent her career in the development sector working with a couple of India-based organisations, implementing interdisciplinary research and development programs to improve public health, pollution control, natural resource management and child rights. She has Bachler’s and Master’s degrees in Biological and Environmental Sciences and has experiences in mobilizing grassroot-communities and developing partnerships with industries, governments, & civil society groups in India. Her organization’s work includes toxic hotspots and teach communities how to improve soil, water and air quality with cost-effective solutions. This field work, combined with their groundbreaking research and advocacy, elevates pollution as a global priority.

Ongoing Projects & Research Works:
Pure Earth India is currently focussed in addressing childhood lead poisoning and implementing a multi-faceted program in the states of Bihar & Tamil Nadu, which includes assessing the extent and sources of lead poisoning, improve recycling practices, phase out informal/illegal ULAB recycling and remediate high-risk sites that are contaminated with lead. We believe these programs will serve as proof-of-concept and build national capacity for widescale replication.

Biography

Vera Araújo Soares is a Professor of Health Psychology and Planetary Health at the BMS Faculty of the University of Twente in the Netherlands, the Past President of the European Health Psychology Society (https://ehps.net/) and the Regional Vice President of the Psychology Coalition at the United Nations(https://psychologycoalitionun.org/ ). She completed her studies at the University of Minho in Portugal where she worked as an academic and a clinician.

In 2006 she moved to Aberdeen as Senior Research Fellow in the Scottish Alliance for Self-Care Research before moving to the University of Newcastle in 2010 and then to the Netherlands in 2020. Her research targets the development and assessment of evidence-based interventions for the promotion of health behaviours, prevention and self-management of chronic conditions. She is passionate about using knowledge developed in her area of research to support the One Health agenda. Her research aims to apply behavioural science to the pursuit of the health of the planet and the health of the population.

She has published in leading international journals including the BMJ, Diabetologia, Pain, Health Psychology and Health Psychology Review (https://scholar.google.de/citations?user=bmSwuBkAAAAJ&hl=en).
